Typography Launch

So today, I had my 212AAD Typography Launch with Lecturer Mark.

He seems very enthusiastic about this module as he loves typography, and collects any sort of typographic letters. In his introduction he showed us some photos of his house and garden which is absolutely rammed with all sorts of lettering. It looks bizarre and very full, but also very stylish and quite fun. It works really well.

Anyway, for this semester's typography module, we are to create an 'Annual Report & Accounts' document (pictures below). This is something that companies do yearly to document the profit and loss for the year, what they have spent the money on this year, and next years aims etc. They are essentially showing the shareholders what they are paying for within the company/society.

Most tend to look quite boring (like the third picture), and our design skills and typographic knowledge is to be used to create a beautiful piece on a topic picked from (what I like to call, I will explain later) the envelope of doom.

So Mark showed us some really nice examples of Typography and some really nice examples of how this document can be done, and then went round with an envelope full of the names of different topics.

I was really worried about this moment, as what I would be doing for the next semester was based on this one pick of a slip of paper from the envelope.

Whilst my friends picked 'Space', 'Museums' 'Fine Art' or 'The Mafia' I managed to pick...

'Lawn Mower Guild'. Brill. What does that even mean?

In that moment I was in such a bad mood, but when I began to do research on Lawn Mowers, their creation, and made a link to Georgian and Victorian gardens, and the work of Capability Brown, I felt much happier about the project.

At the minute, I have lots of lose ideas that need development as the lectures go on.

I hope I will be able to produce something both beautiful and creative for this module.

I will be updating how my progress is going as the module goes on.

Thanks for reading!
