4 Life Lessons...

Today, in Paula's session, she asked us to bring in A2 paper, magazines, newspapers, pens, crayons etc.

An initial task was to take some newspaper and fold it into an interesting was with your eyes shut. This is what I managed to come up with.

At first I was confused about why we were doing this task, but then realised we were going to be making our folding posters.

Once we had done this, I wrote some properties of the paper onto it, however this is quite hard to read from the photo. I wrote things like "folds easily" "sharp edges" "fragile" "textured" "cheap" and "holds it's shape".

Then, we looked at some properties of different types of paper and card. Paula wants us to experiment with different papers and print techniques for our posters.

After this, she set us a collage task where we had to take a piece of A2 paper of our choice, and make a catalogue for talks on 4 Life Lessons. This is in preparation for the catalogue we will have to design for the back of our posters.

However, there were a few rules we had to follow. Firstly, two mandatory rules:

1. You must fold the paper in some way

2. You should try to use cut out letters and not write them.

Then there were 20 more rules on the board. I had to pick 10 for Melanie to follow, and she had to pick 10 for me. My rules were:

1. Break the grid

2. Make it flat

3. Increase the scale

4. Create a collage of photographic images

5. Add vibrant colour

6. Challenge the frame

7. Play with the surface

8. Use asymmetric allignment

9. Engage the fold

10. Activate the "far side of the paper"

I started by cutting my title out of the letters. The rest of my inspiration came from what I found in the magazines I had brought with me. This is how my final catalogue looked:

I think the task went really well. I really like my outcome as it looks vibrant against the black paper. After all the tedious work it is nice to feel really proud of something you have made. I also agree with the values I am promoting, although some of them may seem silly, they are all about looking after yourself and de-stressing.

The task has definitely made me think about the fact that I can use different formats and approaches to my catalogue. I also had fun doing it. I will bring what I have done forwards by applying this creativity and fun into the real catalogue.

Thanks for reading this little extra blog post!
