Maker Space Exhibition

For the Design Contexts module, as brief 4 we were required to do a 'Maker Space' project. This is something that could be going forward within Coventry University. For it, we had to create a 3D free standing 'M' for an exhibition. For the first half of the brief we also had to typeset the words "Maker Space" and create a digital app icon that resembled the M we had made.

The next task was to work in groups of about 40 - so the class divided into 2 groups, and exhibit the 'M's. We had to each come up with an idea and present it and then vote on the best idea, leaving just 2 solid ideas, 2 groups and 1 exhibition.

The best way to document this Maker Space project would be in a sort of diary, so in the space below I will do that.

28th November:

We were able to see the space we would be exhibiting in before getting into groups of 4 to come up with an idea to present, one of which would be taken forward for group A's exhibition.

Group A chose a 'Mirrors and Mannequins' theme for the exhibition out of all the presentations.

30th November:

I made the shape of my M out of corrugated board ready to cover with patchwork fabric to decorate it with.

Luckily I had my Nan and Grandad's cat Bertie to help me!

4th December:

The patchwork was on the M and it was ready to take in for the exhibition.

5th December:

Time to set the exhibition up! I managed to bring in one mannequin and one mirror to contribute, as well as my M.

The first thing we did was get everything we needed. We managed to borrow a lot of mannequins from the art foundation students, so used those for the exhibition. We got together all the mirrors and M's too. We also found some long white boxes to put things on, these could either be stood up or lay flat.

Then, the M's started getting placed, shelves and shards were hung, and this is when it started coming together.

Here you can see that my M was hung from the ceiling where the shards of 'glass' would also be hung.

Here are some photographs of group A's final exhibition.

The exhibition was really fun but also equally as stressful to do and set up, because there were so many people to manage and some people had stronger opinions than others. Over all I think it has been worth it, as the finished thing looks really effective and intriguing.

Thank you for reading, Katie Xx
